Biography

Dr. Peng holds a Ph.D. in Meteorology from the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), University of Miami, with extensive training and working experience in Physical Oceanography, Statistical Analysis, and Scientific Data Stewardship.

Dr. Peng has over twenty years of technical experience in data analysis and ocean and atmosphere modeling, including model development, implementation, application, process study, and validation. She specializes in applying statistical analysis and numerical models to both atmospheric and oceanic systems to examine seasonal, interannual, and decadal variability.

Dr. Peng has led or participated in several projects on evaluating model and remote-sensed products, including NCEP regional forecast and global reanalysis winds (eta 80-km, NCEP/NCAR, and CFSR), global NWP short-range forecast winds (ECMWF, DWD, and JMA), NSCAT ocean surface winds, NCEI blended ocean surface winds (DMSP, SSM/I, QuikSCAT, TMI, AMRS-E), NCEI HIRS surface temperature and humidity, and NOAA/NSIDC passive microwave sea ice concentration Climate Data Record (CDR) product.

Dr. Peng has knowledge and experience in assimilating in situ and satellite measurements into models and assessing the impacts of data assimilation on weather and climate predictions. She also has knowledge of NOAA scientific data appraisal and archival procedures, the Open Archival Information System Reference Model, national and international data formats and metadata standards, and the life cycle of scientific data preservation and stewardship. She led the development of the NCEI/CICS-NC scientific data stewardship maturity matrix and is now overseeing its application and further improvement.

Dr. Peng joined NCICS as a Research Scholar in March 2012. She serves as a scientific steward at NCEI for the NOAA/NSIDC sea ice concentration CDR, the NOAA/WHOI Ocean Surface Bundle CDRs, and NCEI ocean surface flux products.
