David Coates

David Coates joined NCICS in 2021 as a Research Associate specializing in atmospheric and climatological data analysis and scientific programming. His current work is in ingesting and analyzing various large datasets for their use in drought monitoring and estimation of drought amelioration rainfall accumulations, as well analyzing climate data for the creation of extreme event indicators. His other interests include highly parallelized scientific computing of large climate datasets and the atmospheric general circulation.

Prior to coming to NCICS, Dr. Coates earned his B.S. in Atmospheric Science at the University of North Carolina Asheville and his PhD in Atmospheric Science with a specialization in dynamics at Texas A&M University. During his time at Texas A&M, Dr. Coates also worked for the Office of the Texas State Climatologist, giving him familiarity with day-to-day operational climatology and climate datasets. During his time there, in addition to his dissertation on the atmospheric energy cascade, Dr. Coates took part in regular drought monitoring and forecasting, presentation of climate outlooks, statistical analysis of climate data, and model analysis of local recirculation of pollutants in the Houston–Galveston Bay region.
