Biography

Ronald Opio joined NCICS in February 2024 as a Climate Data Analyst (Research Associate). He is working on developing a global land-based gridded climate dataset using transfer learning techniques. This high-resolution dataset will be used for climate monitoring and impact assessment across many regions of the world but it’s utility will be most evident in data sparse regions.

Ronald received his doctoral degree in atmospheric science from Makerere University in 2023. His thesis focused on examining the distribution and climate impact of short-lived climate forcers over East Africa. He applied satellite observations, numerical modelling and deep learning and he is continuing to apply these skills for his work at NCICS.

Ronald also received a Master of Science in Environment and Natural Resources and Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from Makerere University. Prior to joining NCICS, he worked as a graduate teaching assistant at the Department of Geography, Geo-informatics and Climatic Sciences where he was involved in teaching undergraduate courses and supporting research work in the fields of climate and air quality.
